Electrotherapy is the use of electrical energy as a medical treatment. In Physiotherapy, the term electrotherapy can apply to a variety of treatments, including the use of electrical devices like TENS, Therapeutic Ultrasound, Interferential therapy for pain relief, tissue healing or stimulating the muscles fibres to activate. The main methods of electrotherapy used at the Accord Physiotherapy and Sports Injury clinic to complement our hands-on approach and exercise prescription are as follows:
Ultrasonic therapy - Ultrasound generates high-frequency sound waves that are transferred to a specific body area via a round-headed probe. Ultrasound can help relax tight muscles that are sore and warms muscles and soft tissues, which increases circulation that helps to heal.
TENS (Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) - Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a method of pain relief involving the use of a mild electrical current. The electrical impulses can reduce the pain signals going to the spinal cord and brain, which may help relieve pain and relax muscles. They may also stimulate the production of endorphins, which are the body's natural painkillers.
